Stepping Stones Forests

St. Luke’s has been chosen to participate in the ‘Stepping Stones Forests’ project which is sponsored by Amazon Web Services In Communities’. See link below for previous projects:

The project involves the planting of a wide variety of native Irish trees, which will take place in early 2023 around our school campus!! This will hopefully add to our Green Schools Biodiversity flag application this year!! On Friday (October 21st), a group of volunteers will visit the school to prepare the soil for this project. It involves putting layers of paper and cardboard which will then be covered by a thick layer of wood chip mulch on the ground where trees will be planted in the spring.

​These forests are small, dense,  native woodland habitats on the grounds of schools. Stepping Stone forests are  outdoor  classrooms. The little forests provide an opportunity for classes to spend time outside learning about nature. Children grow and mature along with the forest.  There are  a lot of reports and online materials that demonstrate the fantastic benefits for children of being exposed to forests and to learning in a natural environment. We require as many classes to assist rolling out this project!! Weather dependent obviously, but please ask the children (only those timetabled) to wear suitable attire for outside and helping out.

Classes not involved this week will get their turn when planting happens in early 2023!
